In Loving Memory

My mother practised medicine all her life, and she met everyone with a kind heart. She helped many who were ill or struggling to get by. There was once a patient who had almost nothing. After she had examined him and written out his prescription, he took out the last of his living money to pay for the visit and the medicine. She did not hesitate for a moment. She refused the fee, and she waived the cost of the medicine as well.

This happened countless times over her years of practice. She helped people without ever counting the cost. What others owed her, she never held onto; yet she could not bear to owe anyone, or to be a trouble to them. She kept the forgiveness for others, and the responsibility for herself.

She taught me, again and again, to remember every kindness I was given. Even a small help deserves gratitude, and when you are able, you repay it as fully as you can.

Her name was Shuanghao, which means twice good. She was exactly that: one goodness she kept for her family, and the other she gave to everyone who needed her.

She did not only bring me into this world. When my body needed help, she stayed beside me, cared for me, encouraged me, and helped me become well again. To me, she is the person who gave me life twice.

Her leaving came far too suddenly. We always assumed there would be time. Time to sit and eat with her, to talk, to hear her tell us about the past. We assumed the thanking and the repaying could wait, and be done slowly, later.

Only after she was gone did I truly understand that those ordinary days were the most precious hours of my life. The voice I knew so well has become the voice I most want to hear again. The reminders I heard a thousand times have become the teachings I will carry for the rest of my life.

The family and friends she treasured, I will treasure too. Everyone who cared for her and helped her, I will keep in my heart always.

My mother was a Buddhist all her life. She believed in cause and effect, and she practised compassion through her own actions. She planted so many good causes and gathered so much merit that I am certain a good fruit awaits her: that the Buddha will receive her, and she will be reborn in the Pure Land, at peace and at ease.

Someone once said that the hardest part of losing someone is not the parting itself, but the day when no one remembers their name or their story any more.

Mum, you will never be forgotten.

However the years turn, I will remember your name, your voice, your kindness and your teaching. I will tell your story to my children and to the generations after them, so they will know that our family once had an elder who truly lived up to her name. Not one good, but two.

Her name was Huang Shuanghao. Everyone called her Ho Gu.

I will treasure the two lives you gave me. I will look after our family, help as many people as I am able, and carry forward the kindness you left us.

Mum, you worked hard your whole life. Now set down every worry, and go on in peace.

May every seed of goodness you planted come to its full and perfect fruit.

Her Kindness Remembered Always
